About the Artwork
““It’s Just What You Think” is a vivid, direct, and unapologetically human painting. It takes a private moment and turns it into something visually striking: a study of presence, change, and self-awareness. The figure’s pose and the bold handling of colour give the work a tense calm — it feels intimate without being closed off, expressive without losing its sense of observation.
The painting has that rare quality: it doesn’t just depict a person, it carries a psychological charge. There’s confidence in the composition, but also a sense of transition, which gives the work depth beyond the immediate image.
This piece invites viewers to engage with themes of vulnerability, transformation, and the complexities of self-image. The painting, derived from a photograph, serves as a testament to the intimate connection between the subject and the artist. It reflects not only the physical changes but also the emotional landscape that accompanies such a significant life event.
The use of vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes in this acrylic work emphasizes the subject’s strength and beauty, challenging conventional notions of femininity and self-acceptance. Each stroke is a celebration of the human form, rendered with both sensitivity and confidence.
Artist’s Perspective
As an artist, I draw inspiration from the people and moments that shape my life. This piece is a reminder of the power of observation and the stories that unfold in everyday encounters. It encapsulates my ongoing exploration of human connection, a theme that has been central to my artistic journey since 1983.
“It’s Just What You Think” comes from a photograph of a friend after she had breast enhancement surgery. That origin matters because it gives the work a very specific emotional truth — not as a literal record, but as a starting point for reflection. I wanted the painting to retain the physical presence of the photograph while pushing it into painterly territory through colour, shape, and contrast.
What interests me here is the space between appearance and meaning. The subject becomes more than an image of a body; it becomes a moment of change, identity, and the way we interpret what we think we’re seeing.
