About the Artwork
“Wayne and Darbella” captures a shared moment of warmth, laughter, and connection. The portrait feels immediate and alive, with vibrant colour and loose, expressive handling that gives the figures a sense of presence rather than stiffness. The green backdrop and animated faces create a mood of joy that makes the work feel both personal and universally relatable.
Artist’s Perspective
This painting comes from a photograph of Darbella and me, just after we got caught in a rainstorm in Costa Rica. Being Costa Rica, we dried quickly!
As I sat down to create this piece, I wanted to encapsulate the warmth and happiness that my wife, Darbella, brings into my life. The bright colours reflect our shared adventures and the countless smiles we’ve exchanged over the years. Each brushstroke is infused with the passion I feel for our journey together, and I hope it resonates with anyone who has experienced the magic of companionship.
The backdrop of lush Costa Rican greenery serves as a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, often unnoticed in our busy lives. It’s a nod to the simple pleasures—like a sunny day spent outdoors, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. The vibrant hues mirror our personalities: bold, lively, and full of life.
Creating this portrait was a delightful experience, filled with laughter and a few playful jabs at each other’s quirks. It’s a testament to our relationship, where humour and love intertwine seamlessly. I wanted to capture not just our faces, but the spirit of our bond—one that thrives on joy and shared experiences.
This piece is rooted in the spirit of companionship and the everyday beauty of being seen by someone you know well. Rather than aiming for formal likeness alone, I wanted the painting to hold the feeling of the moment: the ease between us, the spark of shared laughter, and the sense that connection itself can be the subject.
Working in acrylic allowed me to keep the energy open and fresh, with colour and brushwork carrying as much meaning as structure.
