“Afternoon Light, Culo and Lace” is a study in contrast and intimacy. The composition centers on the human form, bathed in the soft, golden light of late afternoon. Lace details catch the sun, casting intricate shadows across skin and fabric, while the figure’s pose balances vulnerability with quiet confidence. This piece invites viewers to linger on the interplay between light, texture, and the subtle narratives of the body.
The background, a tapestry of blues and reds, contrasts beautifully with the softness of the figure, making it pop with life. It’s as if the colors are whispering secrets of passion and tranquility, inviting you to lose yourself in the scene. The intricate details of the lingerie add a layer of complexity, hinting at the beauty of vulnerability wrapped in strength.
The painting comes from a photograph taken during a photo shoot. The afternoon light was filtered through the slats of window blinds, flooding the bed with directed light. The subject’s relaxed posture is the result of a long session coming to a close.
My figurative work is rooted in observation—capturing not just the physical presence of the model, but the emotional atmosphere of the moment. For this painting, I used my own photographic reference, then translated it into acrylic with a focus on blocked colour and expressive brushwork.
The series of images that this painting comes from were intentionally photographed darkly. This seemed difficult for the painting, as I wanted more detail and expressive colours. I edited the image to enhance the hidden details.

The challenge was to render the delicacy of lace and the warmth of sunlight without losing the immediacy of the gesture. The result is a painting that feels both timeless and contemporary.

“Wayne’s ability to capture the play of light and the intimacy of a moment is unmatched. This piece brings warmth and quiet energy to my space every day.”
