“Hangover Blues” captures a moment of deep introspection—a solitary figure enveloped in rich, layered blues, their posture and gaze inviting the viewer into a private world of contemplation. The interplay of light and shadow across the canvas is intentional, echoing the emotional complexity that often lingers after a long night or a difficult experience. This piece is not only about literal hangovers, but about the universal feeling of being caught between reflection and renewal.

Artist’s Perspective

As a figurative artist, I’m drawn to the subtle narratives that unfold in everyday life.

And, of course, there’s a backstory.

The woman featured was a friend “back in the day.” This was the third proton session. Where this one was different was that I picked her up for the photo shoot after she and her band had played a gig until 3am. She’d gotten a couple of hours sleep before I arrived.

And was somewhat out of it. We shot in two locations, and the expression in the painting was all she could muster.

For this painting, I used acrylic’s versatility to build up texture and depth. My brushwork here is deliberately expressive—loose in some areas, precise in others—to evoke both vulnerability and resilience. The palette, dominated by blues, is meant to suggest both melancholy and hope, depending on the viewer’s moment-to-moment story.
