About the Artwork
“Between the Observer and the Observed” explores that charged space where looking becomes a kind of exchange. The figure is not simply being watched; they are also aware, present, and internally alive. That tension gives the painting its quiet force. It’s a work about perception, identity, and the subtle shift that happens when the viewer realizes the subject may be returning the gaze.
In the vibrant world of art, where colours dance and emotions collide, “Between the Observer and the Observed” stands as a striking testament to the complexity of human experience. This piece invites viewers to step into a realm where perception and reality intertwine, challenging us to reflect on our own roles as both observers and participants in the tapestry of life.
The artwork captivates with its bold use of colour and abstract forms. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dynamic tension, drawing the eye to the layered portraits of the same person that seem to pulse with emotion.
Each version of the figure tells a story, their expressions a blend of vulnerability and strength, inviting us to ponder the narratives behind their gazes. It’s as if they are whispering secrets about identity, self-perception, and the often blurry line between how we see ourselves and how others see us.
The artist’s relaxed yet passionate approach shines through in every brushstroke. There’s a wit embedded in the composition, a playful challenge to the viewer: “What do you see?” This isn’t just a painting; it’s a conversation starter, a mirror reflecting our own complexities and the myriad ways we navigate our existence.
Artist’s Perspective
This work is rooted in observation — the kind that finds meaning in small, fleeting gestures. Rather than dramatizing the scene, I wanted to preserve its quiet truth: children absorbed in discovery, the natural world nearby, and the feeling that something ordinary can also be deeply moving.
This painting fits naturally within my figurative practice, where I often work from photographs and then reshape the image to bring forward the feeling beneath the surface. I’m interested in that edge between observation and interpretation — where a real person, a real moment, becomes something more psychologically layered in paint.
The painting is a combination of 2 backlit photos from the same photo shoot. The top image is flipped; the right side is darker and more shadowed, reflecting a key piece of human nature. The bottom image combines the two, showing us a door into the mysterious.
