About the Artwork
“Jazz Hands” captures a body in motion, frozen at a moment that feels both playful and charged with energy. The figure’s extended arm and loose, dance-like pose give the composition a sense of spontaneous movement, while the grounded placement on the floor keeps the scene intimate and human. It’s a painting about gesture, rhythm, and the way physical expression can carry emotion without a single word.
The setting, with its warm wood floor and green-panelled backdrop, gives the figure a distinct presence in space. The contrast between the figure’s soft pink top, blue jeans, and the surrounding colour blocks creates visual tension that keeps the eye moving through the composition.
“Jazz hands” encapsulates the spirit of dance—it’s not just about the steps; it’s about the emotion, the connection, and the sheer joy of movement. The dancer’s relaxed posture and the playful twist of her fingers evoke a sense of freedom, reminding us that dance is as much about self-expression as it is about technique.
Artist’s Perspective
This painting grew out of a photo session with a dance troupe, but it is not just a record of a pose. I was interested in how the body can communicate character through posture alone — how a moment of movement can feel theatrical, ironic, or even a little defiant.
Working in acrylic allowed me to push the colour and surface quickly, preserving the immediacy of the gesture while still shaping the form with light and shadow. The result is a figurative work that balances realism with a more expressive, painterly interpretation.
The artwork showcases the dancer in a moment of fluidity, her body arched and limbs extended as if reaching for the very essence of movement itself. The interplay of light and shadow highlights the contours of her form, emphasizing the elegance and strength that dance embodies. You can almost hear the rhythm of the music echoing in the background, urging her to push the boundaries of her artistry.
